
The Federal Government of Nigeria has imposed a 7 years ban on establishing new tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The announcement, helped at halting the proliferation of poorly utilized institutions and addressing the non-working resources during the meeting they held on Wednesday by Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
On what the minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa presented, said the moratorium was essential to improve the quality of learning and during this period, the government will focus on upgrading existing facilities, hiring qualified staff, and expanding the capacity of current institutions.
On his word, he said;
“Many federal tertiary institutions are struggling with inadequate funding, infrastructure deficits, and declining academic standards, making expansion unsustainable at this time.“
The president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu presided over the meeting at which the policy was adopted.
